Move Orders And Sub inventory Transfer in EBS R12

Since both move order transfer and sub-inventory transfer, both transfer items between sub-inventories, when are they used?

When should Move order transfer be used and when should move-order transfer be used?

Difference between Move order and Sub inventory Transfer

Move orders are requests for the movement of material within a single organization.

They allow movement of material within a warehouse or facility for purposes like replenishment, material storage relocation, and quality handling. You can generate move orders either manually or automatically.

The difference between the two is that with the Move Order you can generate paper work (Pick Slip). With the Sub inventory Transfer there is no paper work.

Another difference is that in move orders, you can have an approval so you are not simply "taking" material from a sub inventory that is under someone else's control.

Also, move orders create allocations. So you can place hold on the material with the intention of picking it up a little later.

In sub inventory transfer, there is no reservation / allocation. So until you actually pick up the material and perform the transaction, someone else can claim the material.

Also - Move order can be treated as a demand in the Min-max planning, and Purchase Requisition can be created based on the Move order requisition demand.

This feature will be useful, if the Move order is created by the end user and the material-issuing authority wants to convert the move order into a P.R automatically, when supply is not available for this Move order. But, there won't be any link between the Move order number & the Purchase requisition number

The drawbacks of Move order are

i) During Move order approval, the approve has to approve line by line. This will be a tiresome process, if there are more than 100 lines in the Move order

ii) There can be only one move order approve (planner) assigned for one item. This will be a problem, if the same item has to be used in different departments & the Move order for this item - from each department has to be approved by the respective
department head

iii) There is no approval-hierarchy for move-order
